The Old Stable Studio
The Painting School was established in 1985. The cosy atmosphere of the traditional, fully equipped Old Stable Studio - Stiúideo an Sean Stábla - c. 1850, is the perfect location for a painting break on The Wild Atlantic Way.It provides the ideal workspace for beginners and experienced painters to explore their creativity, hone their artistic skills, relax, unwind and experience the ever changing light of the Achill sky. The Studio with large, panoramic windows is perfectly situated on a sheltered inlet and overlooks the magnificent Cleggan Mountain range, with views of Croagh Patrick to the South. It is on The Great Western Greenway walk/cycle track from Achill to Westport.
The School has attracted eminent artists in the past. In 1999 the world-renowned Canadian artist Doris McCarthy RCA and Wendy Wacko, owner of the famous Whistler Gallery, enjoyed a week’s painting holiday at The Old Stable Studio. They returned for a month in 2004 to prepare for a major exhibition in Canada of scenes of Achill and the Curraun Peninsula, taking Achill’s beauty out to a broad international audience.
