Seosamh
Ó'Dalaigh
Artist & Director
Seosamh Ó'Dálaigh has been painting the
Achill landscape for well over 20 years. His dream was to
bring people interested in art to the Achill area to sample
at first hand its rugged landscapes and seascapes.
Towards this end in 1985 he established the Yawl Art
Gallery and the Ó'Dálaigh School of Painting which is based in Dooega, Achill. There he continues to
paint and bring artists and students to his Gallery putting
Achill on the map as a painters' paradise. The paintings and
works of O'Dálaigh have a central theme. They are of
Achill and are imbued with the thoughts and culture of an
island community. He derives the utmost pleasure in painting
local people in their own surroundings. This is particularly
true in relation to boats and the sea. The Gallery is named
after the famous work boat of Achill down the years, the
Yawl.
In the year 2000 in co-operation with
Údarás na Gaeltachta he succeeded in building
a new Art Gallery, Studio and a modern Apartment adjacent to
his home at Owenduff on the Achill/Mulranny road. Here the
Ó'Dálaigh School of Painting is now based. It
is one of the few Schools of Painting in Ireland where the
students can improve their Irish while they study art.
Ó'Dálaigh encourages the use of the
"Cúpla focal" during his classes.
His paintings hang in public and private collections in
Ireland and other countries and he has exhibited
continuously in the Yawl Art Gallery since 1985. Seosamh has
received many commissions for portraits and landscape
paintings and he has participated in numerous exhibitions
including:
- Claremorris Exhibition
- Mayo Artists
- Guinness Hop Store
- Clifden Arts Week
- Islands touring Exhibition
- One man show in Westport
